Meteorological observations date back to 1937 when 3 Cuban Officers under orders from Cuban President Batista formed the Cuban MET office.

Due to the location of the Cayman Islands, a weather station was created in the early 1950's to provide early warning of Hurricanes to the United States.

In the early 1980's the Civil Aviation Department created a meteorological office specifically to provide aviation weather for flights coming to and leaving Grand Cayman.

The National Weather Service was created in 2010 providing meteorological services to the Airports of Cayman, as well as providing Hurricane detection and warnings for the local population.
